The Math of Matter/The Surreality of Spirit

A meditation on the twin faces of reality

May 18, 2025

In the luminous geometry of existence, two vast kingdoms rise.
One carved in crystalline clarity, in the equations of stars and electrons.
The other bathed in dreamlight, where symbols breathe and the soul swims in myth.

They are not enemies.
They are the two eyes of the cosmos—one sharp with reason, one soft with vision.

🔢 The Math of Matter

The world that yields to numbers

Matter, in its grandeur, is obedient to mind. Its language is mathematics, and science is its interpreter.
From Newton’s falling apple to Einstein’s curving spacetime, nature reveals her form through equations. Atoms spin. Photons dance. Bridges rise. Satellites land.

“All is number.” – Pythagoras

We now know this to be more than metaphor:

  • Particles are described by probabilities.
  • Forces are fields.
  • Chemistry is a balance sheet of atoms.

And yet, even the great physicists speak in hushed tones of mystery. The deeper the measurement, the more profound the unknown.

🌌 The Surreality of Spirit

The world that resists measureBeyond measure lies meaning. The soul cannot be graphed. Carl Jung saw this inner world as alive with archetypes, whispering from the depths of the psyche.

“The soul is partly in time and partly in eternity.” – Carl Jung

Emerson walked its forests:

“The currents of the Universal Being circulate through me; I am part or particle of God.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Swedenborg beheld its architecture:

“Nothing exists in the natural world that does not correspond to something in the spiritual world.” – Emanuel Swedenborg

This is the surreal — not nonsense, but the more-than-rational. A place of images, emotions, symbols, and synchronicities. It cannot be proven. But it can be known.

🎨 Between the Worlds

Living as a bridgeWe are not forced to choose. We are made to walk between. Science gives us clarity. Spirit gives us depth. And art? Art is the bridge between the two. It gives flesh to the ineffable, and fire to the formula.

“Every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.” – Walt Whitman

So take up your brush. Speak your vision. Sing what cannot be said. For in creating, we connect what the world has divided.

We remember we are made of stardust…
and called by dreams.
